Geofence
A geofence is a virtual boundary drawn around a real place on a map. In construction payroll, a 50-metre geofence around the site gate checks that a worker is actually on site when they check in.
A muster roll is only as good as the proof behind it. A geofence turns a worker's phone into that proof: if the check-in happens inside the boundary, they were on site. If it happens kilometres away, it does not count.

How a geofence works
A geofence is a boundary set on a digital map, defined by a centre point and a radius. When a worker's phone shares its location at check-in, the system compares that location with the boundary. Inside the fence the check-in is valid; outside it the entry is flagged.
Why 50 metres suits a construction site
Site gates are busy at 6am and phone locations drift a few metres. A 50-metre radius is wide enough to cover the gate, the site office and the material store, but tight enough to exclude a nearby matatu stage or a worker still at home. It keeps honest workers covered while casual fraud stays out.
What a geofence does not do
A geofence proves location, not hours. It cannot tell whether a fundi worked hard or clocked in for a friend. Pair it with a locked muster roll, a foreman's review and a check-in window so every entry is validated by both place and time.
Frequently asked questions
Does geofencing drain a worker's data or battery?
Check-in only reads location at the moment the worker confirms, not continuously. There is no tracking between check-ins and no app to install, so the cost in data and battery is minimal.
What if the phone has poor GPS at the site gate?
GPS can be slow under a roof or beside tall blocks. FundiPay allows a short check-in window, and the foreman can review and confirm exceptions rather than leaving attendance to chance.
Can a worker check in from home?
Only if home sits inside the geofence, which is rare. A check-in recorded outside the 50-metre boundary is flagged for the foreman, so remote attendance never enters payroll unnoticed.
