Direct M-Pesa B2C Payroll

Cash payroll is the riskiest hour of a Kenyan construction week: money leaves the bank in bulk, is counted into envelopes at the site office, and ends in an argument about who was actually paid. FundiPay replaces the envelopes with a single M-Pesa B2C payroll run that pays every fundi directly to their own phone, in one afternoon.

What M-Pesa B2C payroll replaces

M-Pesa B2C (Business to Customer) pays individuals directly from a business account. That is exactly what wages are: money moving from your company to a worker, not to a shop or a till. Running payroll on B2C means every shilling has a transaction reference, a recipient and a timestamp — the opposite of a signed cash envelope.

  • Bulk cash withdrawn from the bank and carried to site.
  • Envelopes counted by hand and signed for in a book.
  • A queue of fundis on Friday afternoon waiting to be paid.
  • No proof of payment when a worker claims they were short-paid.

How a FundiPay B2C run works

Payroll starts from the locked muster roll, so you are paying the people the site actually verified. Every worker has a phone number on their FundiPay record, checked at onboarding against their national ID. When you approve the run, FundiPay sends each wage as an M-Pesa B2C payment through Safaricom's Daraja API.

You watch the run complete live: each worker moves from pending to paid, and any number that fails is flagged immediately instead of being buried in a Friday queue. The whole run normally completes in minutes, not hours.

Every fundi gets an M-Pesa SMS and a payslip

Each worker receives the standard M-Pesa confirmation SMS on their handset, plus a digital payslip showing gross pay, statutory deductions and net pay. The M-Pesa SMS is the proof of payment; the payslip is the explanation. Together they end most disputes before they start, because the worker can see exactly how their number was arrived at.

Why B2C, and never a personal account

Wages must move as B2C from the business account. Paying staff from a personal M-Pesa account blurs the audit trail, mixes company and personal money, and makes it hard to prove wage spend to a developer or the taxman. Safaricom applies tiered per-transaction B2C limits — commonly quoted up to KES 250,000 depending on tier — and ordinary site wages sit far below that ceiling, so limits are rarely a practical obstacle.

Frequently asked questions

Can FundiPay pay workers without a smartphone?

Yes. M-Pesa B2C pays any registered M-Pesa number, including a basic handset. Workers only need a phone that receives SMS and M-Pesa, which is what most fundis already carry on site.

What happens if a worker's M-Pesa number is wrong?

FundiPay validates numbers at onboarding against the worker's ID and flags payments that fail. A failed transaction is shown in the live run so the payroll officer can correct the number and retry the same afternoon, rather than discovering the problem on Monday.

Is there a transaction limit we should worry about?

Safaricom sets tiered B2C per-transaction limits, commonly quoted up to KES 250,000 depending on your tier. Construction wages are well below that, so day-to-day payroll is not restricted by the limit.

How long does a full payroll run take?

Once the muster roll is locked and payroll is approved, a site's full run typically completes in minutes. Workers receive their M-Pesa messages the same afternoon, and you can see exactly who has been paid.
