Fundi Emergency Loans

When a fundi's child is sent home from school for fees or a relative is admitted to hospital, the pressure lands the same day — and the site foreman is usually the first person asked for money. FundiPay gives verified workers a proper way to access emergency loans and wage advances, repaid automatically from wages they are going to earn anyway.

The problem with informal advances

Most site advances are informal: the fundi asks the foreman, the foreman digs into the cash box or his own pocket, and the "loan" is remembered in a notebook — or not remembered at all. This is how wage disputes, foreman debt and quiet resentment start. The worker who borrowed is now dependent on one person's goodwill, and the figures never reconcile at the end of the month.

How FundiPay advances work

A worker becomes eligible for advances once their identity and M-Pesa number are verified and they have built a record of confirmed attendance. Emergency advances and salary advances are then repaid automatically from future wages, so there is no chasing and no awkward conversation at the gate.

Because attendance and rates are tracked, the system knows what a worker has already earned and can size an advance against verified wage history rather than against the foreman's judgement.

Two kinds of advance

FundiPay separates the genuine emergency from the ordinary salary advance, so both are handled cleanly.

  • Emergency advances for urgent, one-off costs like medical or school fees.
  • Salary advances against wages already earned but not yet paid.
  • Automatic repayment from the next wage run, with the balance visible to the worker.
  • Every amount recorded on the payslip — no hidden deductions.

Why this protects the site too

A workforce with a legitimate way to handle a crisis is a calmer, more reliable workforce — and a contractor who never has to referee private loans. Because advances are repaid from the payroll system and shown on the payslip, the site's wage cost stays clean and auditable. The foreman keeps their cash box shut, and disputes about "you still owe me" simply do not arise.

Frequently asked questions

Who qualifies for a fundi advance?

Workers whose identity, phone number and M-Pesa record have been verified on FundiPay, with a track record of confirmed site attendance. Eligibility grows with verified wage history.

How is the advance repaid?

Automatically, from the worker's future wages. The repayment is calculated and deducted in the normal payroll run and shown clearly on the digest of the next payslip, so there are no surprises.

Does the contractor carry the risk of these advances?

That depends on how the programme is set up. The practical benefit for the contractor is that advances leave the site cash box and the foreman's notebook and move into a tracked system with a visible repayment path.

Is this really different from a loan shark?

Yes. The advance is sized against wages the worker has already earned or will shortly earn, repaid through payroll, and fully disclosed on the payslip. There is no cash handed over at a gate with an unclear interest figure attached.
